In June, our beloved river, the Danube in Budapest
decided to push its limits.
The heavy spring rains especially in Germany and
Austria caused the greatest flood of the century in Central-Europe.
The water limit in Budapest broke records, the
Danube obscured buildings, piers, half of the Margaret island, it was even
awashing the the stairs of the Parlament!
Not only the locals were concerned and curious
about the river's wrecking work, but many tourists watched the growing river
with worry and admiration at the same time.
Some parts of the city were unaccessible, but we
wanted to show our ethusiastic tourists the floody Budapest. The Riverbank Tour
was a perfect sightseeing activity for that purpose! We ran along the Danube
and admired the beautiful vistas of Budapest. The sunset was breathtaking:
there was water and water everywhere and the setting sun reflected on the
Danube...We even saw military helicopters making sure the level of the water is
under control.
So did the flood stop us from discovering Budapest?
No, not at all! We put on our trainers and found the safe little paths between
the closed areas.
These running tours during the flood remain
memorable for us for sure. We got to see our city and the Danube from a
different perspective as the river looked so relaxed without all the heavy
water transportation which usually takes place there. We also had the chance to
run along the empty wharf and enjoy the refreshing company of the runners and
bikers without all the noisy cars...
